What Services do you offer?
I offer cover design, formatting, graphics (teasers/promotional), swag design, etc.
Do you have a samples of your work?
Yes, you can view my portfolio here.
What are your prices?
My prices vary from project to project, but you can find all of that information here.
What programs do you use?
Cover Design: Photoshop and Illustrator
Swag: Photoshop and Illustrator
Formatting: Photoshop, InDesign (paperbacks), and Jutoh (eBooks)
When should I book?
I prefer that you book at least 4 weeks in advance, if at all possible, but things get moved around often. I can usually find an opening closer to your time frame. And I can usually rush a project (for an added fee).
How should I book?
Emailing me by using this Contact Form or directly at firstname.lastname@example.org is best.
How do I pay?
For all projects over $50 I require 50% down to book. This goes directly towards your total, but ensures that you get a spot on my calendar.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I will only accept PayPal. You do not have to have an account though PayPal to make a payment, but it is recommended.
What is your process?
Formatting – scroll down.
Cover Design – scroll down.
For everything else, I just need teaser quotes, promo dates, type of images desired (unless those are provided by you), sizes you wish to print (bookmarks/lip balm/etc.).
What is your turn around?
It really depends on the project, scale of the project, how quickly I get information/files from you (mostly for formatting), and when you book.
Can I make corrections even after the final has been sent?
Yes! I don’t ever mind making simple corrections, especially on formatting, because I know once those files go out readers message about typos you want fixed.
Do you outsource?
Yes, I have started sending some teasers to my sister and partner in crime, Stacy Garcia. She is brilliant when it comes to looks and styles of teasers. You will be in good hands with her .
What is your process for formatting?
For formatting, I do not read the book before hand (I just don’t have time anymore), so having a good synopsis of the story is a big help. Also if you already have some ideas in mind, those help too. We will work together to give you a beautiful professional look.
I want my fonts to match the cover, but you didn’t design it. Can you do that?
Yes. You will need to find out from your cover designer what the fonts are. If fonts need to be purchased, I do charge a fee depending on the cost.
Why don’t you send the .docx file when formatting?
Word is not a program I prefer and I do not use it for formatting. Most anyone can format a book decently in Word, but I take it to that next level by using professional programs that give your book that shine and sparkle it deserves!
Does the size of the file matter?
Yes, very much so for KDP. The larger the file the higher the delivery costs.
You can read about KDP delivery costs here.
When will I know the page count in my book?
As soon as I have the final finished and proofed I will send you the file with the total page count (this number doesn’t always match the page number in the back as there is front matter and back matter that do not get page numbers.
How can I view my files?
Why do you offer so many different types of formatting designs?
I noticed that I had a wide range of requests. Some people like their file sizes as small as possible to avoid delivery costs. Others just want it sparkly and pretty no matter the cost. Charging the same amount for different needs seemed wrong, especially when one requires way less work than the other.
What is your process for Cover Design?
For cover design you and I will either email/message back and forth OR schedule a phone call to discuss what you’re looking for. Once we get all of that out of the way I come up with a good mockup of what I envisioned. It’s best if I have a blurb and even some image ideas, if you have those already.
How do I know what size to order?
That really depends on you? Industry standard is somewhere between 5×8 and 5.5×8.5, but many in the indie community prefer 6×9. It’s really up to you what size you go with.
Cream or white paper? There’s an option for that?
Yes. Again, it boils down to preference. This does factor into the size of your book though, so it’s something that needs to be figured out before final files are sent.
What if I use a different formatter?
Totally fine. I know many people who even format their own books. I will just need your page count in order to finalize your cover design.
Will I have the names of the fonts used?
Yes. Upon request I will give you the names of the fonts used so everything promo wise can match.
What file types will you send me?
For digital I send JPEGS using a sRGB coloring scale.
For printing final I send PDF using a CMYK coloring scale as that is what Create Space and Ingram Sparks uses.
How do I credit you?
Credit must be included in the front of the book as Cover Design © Alyssa at uplifting-designs.com
I need teasers, but what do you need from me?
I need quotes, looks of the character, the cover, and names of fonts–if you have them.
Where do I order bookmarks from?
I usually suggest GotPrint.com. Their prices are always reasonable and their quality is much better than many other sites I’ve dealt with.
How do I know what sizes?
For anything swag, it will depend on where you order from. I will need to know where you plan to order from in order to get you the correct sizes.
I think that just about covers it. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to email me at email@example.com.
